this June
capturing the end of these roses cut from my garden
spring came very early after a mild winter
the garden has never been more beautiful
a record drought in May and now the first heat wave of summer
local berries are also early and now in the stores
how does your garden grow?

So pretty. I miss roses.
Hattie, can you not grow roses In Hawaii? You do have so many exotics that we can’t grow here
Well our garden is well into its annual rampage, but steps are already being undertaken……..I say no more on that account. The roses are in bloom, as are the blue geraniums. One joy I experienced yesterday, the first flowering of one of our Philadelphus – Belle Etoile.
“Annual rampage” indeed! It seems like the weeds grew all winter and I still haven’t got to all of them, never do actually with invasives like creeping buttercup, sigh. Sounds like you are master gardeners, especially when you are able to name your treasures! I try to record new plants in a book but don’t always remember, and I forget names quickly. This is also a garden we inherited so there are many very old shrubs especially rhodos that I have no names for. I just enjoy the progression of flowers through all the seasons! Now back to watering, weeding, deadheading and pruning. Enjoy yours!
Does planting three little cherry tomato plants in a large clay pot count as a garden? If so, I have one again this year after a very long time without one. We’ll see how that goes.
I love your rose heads. It’s still far too early here for roses in bloom – the lilacs have just arrived and they are wonderful. Next I’ll be watching for the buttercups in the grass ^^.
Your cherry tomatoes in a pot sound wonderful – I hope they do well. For the past two years, we’ve not been growing tomatoes and peppers on our deck because of the heavy work hauling the pots up and down spring and fall. I do miss them though and they don’t do as well in the garden where it is not hot enough for them.
The pot was the one that held the royal palm we bought that died a slow death. Always so sad when that happens but grocery store plants often aren’t healthy.
As for the tomatoes, I can only hope. We have a west facing balcony that may or may not provide enough sunshine.
ps: The good thing about cherry tomatoes is you can grow them in a small pot – and even grow them indoors. Or so they say ^^.
I know that sad feeling when a plant dies. Cherry tomatoes are usually pretty easy and many are early bearers so they are a good choice. There are so many varieties out there to try, such as “Gold Nugget” for its taste and long period of production. In our area the cooler nights are a challenge so the deck was always the best in keeping the heat. Your west sun should work well.
Lovely roses. My shade garden is splendiferous, but the sun side looks a little bedraggled. I do have roses and irises and so on there, but the usual Yankee invasion of bishop’s weed and Japanese wire grass is out of control… I need a team of gardeners. Ticked at that bishop!
Marly, glad to hear some of your garden is great. The weeds you name are unknown to me, by name anyway, but I know that out of control feeling and desire for a team of gardeners:-) We don’t use weedkillers but have not found any solution to that dang buttercup, which spreads via underground roots and above ground runners and by seed and is poisonous to grazing animals, which we don’t have of course. So we just live with it and pull what we can out of the flowerbeds.
Oh, we have that as well… Sneaky plant!
Hard on the back and knees, too!
The honeysuckle is feeding the hummingbirds, but otherwise all is oppressively green and jungle-like here in the sweltry Ohio Valley. The colorful spring flowers are all gone. A few tiger lilies survive here and there in the wild. I wish I had a little garden near in which to plant some marigolds at least.
Rouchswalwe! Sorry to hear about the oppressive weather. Hope you are getting some rain to encourage the summer flowers. Can you grow a colourful pot of flowers on your little balcony for some cheer? Meanwhile it continues dry and hot here so I spend a lot of time dragging about the water hose 🙂
Kuinka kaunis kuva! Ruusut ovat aina kiitollinen kuvauskohde.
Tuima, onpa hauska kuulla pitkästä aikaa! Kiva että kuva mielyttää. Kiitos sanoista ja käynnistä!
(Translation: how wonderful to hear from you in such long while. Glad you like the image. Thanks for the kind words and the visit!)
So very beautiful: those colors against the black! (My own garden is being neglected, I’m afraid.) And sorry I haven’t commented in so long.
Hi Beth, glad you like these! It is so hot here that all I can do is try keep the garden watered, never mind weeded, deadheaded… The lawn is a crisp brown.
Unfortunately it doesn’t grow. My “garden” should be in my balcony, but because of a facade renovation balconies must be empty.
Tuima, sorry to hear that! Hopefully it is just this summer and you will have your garden back next year. One of my daughters got notice that her balcony deck has to be redone but it is covered in many pots of mostly vegetables.
