socks by Lucy
Pardon the long silence here for I have been busy with spring — much work in the garden, much work cleaning cobwebs indoors now revealed by increased sunshine giving proof of my lazy housekeeping. Having visitors is also an incentive.
I am also late in sharing my delight in a wondrous gift from THE artist of the knitting needles – Lucy of Box Elder. A little while ago, she had requested my foot dimensions so she could make me some warm slipper socks. It was like Christmas over again when opening the mail package for these are like those worn by the Finnish Santa and his elves. Red hearts are a beloved symbol in Finnish crafts, and red is my favourite colour often mixed with black, both in our home decor and my own wardrobe. Note the lovely craftmanship in the felted wool sole with silicone heart shapes for non-slippage!
My feet and I thank you, dearest Lucy, for this wondrous gift!

Pieces of art – overflowing with ‘Lucyness ‘ – one can feel the caring thoughts she put into design and color.
And they are slippsafe.
Yes to all you say, Ellena! She told me that she had researched various Scandinavian designs which was very thoughtful of her – she knows me well!
Definitely the most awesome pair of hand-knitted socks I’ve ever seen! And the bottom detail (this is from a once-knitter) makes them even more impressive. Lucky you!
Naomi, thanks, I am indeed very lucky! I’m not a knitter though my mother was and two of our daughters are as well, but nothing as amazing as Lucy’s work.
They are the most beautiful and magnificent socks I’ve seen in a very long time. Lucy is a wonderfully skilled knitter and what a delightful present!
I’m happy for you that you’ve been able to enjoy your garden. I can relate to the spring cleaning ^^. They call it that because no one can keep up with the work in winter.
Susan, yes these are indeed magnificent, so much so that I feel a little like framing them 🙂 Lucy is a master!
I love being out in the garden but this time of the year there is a lot of work pruning, weeding, moving plants and planting! I’m exhausted at the end of the day. The same goes for spring cleaning, and we haven’t even done the windows yet. Ah well, we would not give up this place for anything.
I am glad you like them, and nice to have such fine extra photos to add to the record! Hope they aren’t too big and clumsy, they did come out large. I meant to say the braided division between the foot and leg is called a Latvian braid, something I’ve been wanting to learn for a while and the first time I tried it out anywhere!
I got around to cleaning the windows the other day, the garden looks so much brighter through them, though I can also see all the weeds more clearly too!
Lucy, that is very interesting about the braid being Latvian, it really adds such a special touch, I love it. They are roomy but not clumsy, I like that they are not tight like so many commercially made socks tend to be for me. Slipper socks are the perfect thing for this barefoot or sock footed gal on all the cool hardwood floors in our home. Merci beaucoup!
P.S. you are most welcome to grab these photos for your own records, or I can send you high resolution ones.
There is truly nothing like a good pair of socks to warm the feet and the heart. These are magnificent!
I’m so glad we all agree on their magnificence, and the warm feet and the warm hearts of the maker and the receiver!
Those are wonderful socks! They will last forever, I’ll bet. I have a pair of wool socks someone knit me years and years ago that I always wear when I go hiking, and I never get footsore.
Oh, the housecleaning, the kitchen grime especially!
Yes, wool is wonderful for the feet. I miss a pair that fit my walking shoes I had for years that finally wore out in spite of frequent darning. One of my daughters knit me a thick pair for wearing indoors w/o shoes which I later shrunk by accident, so I’m delighted to now have these gorgeous slipper socks!
