snow white
The Snow Queen came for a visit yesterday evening and overnight, accompanied by Wind.
How bright was the night, keeping me awake watching tossing snow-heavy tree branches and flying snow devils.
Not much of the five centimeters or so melted in today’s sunshine.
Tonight is very cold and clear. Winter is here.

The arrival of the Snow Queen and Wind is somewhat reminiscent of the Ancient Greek Pelasgian creation myth of Eurynome and Ophion (the latter created from the Wind created by Eurynome’s passing). So winter’s creation is coming afresh. I trust that the enjoyment of the season will be at a maximum, and the problems of winter be at a minimum.
Tom, how delightful that you were made to think of a Greek creation myth. I don’t know that one and must look it up.
As a full-blooded Finn, I do like winter but am glad I did not have to drive anywhere for there were many accidents on the icy roads.
Ah, a beautiful dance by the Snow Queen and Boreas! The perfect backdrop for a cup of hot cocoa!
Ah, Boreas, the god of the north wind was very busy that night! Yes, hot cocoa is a favourite here.
Your Snow Queen is kinder and softer than the one Gerta strove against–hope your winter is so!
Marly, this snow is hanging around because it is staying cold and clear. We even have frost flowers on the skylights this morning – much prettier than our usual rain, expected to return in a few days. Our winters are usually not too bad, hope yours will be the kinder softer kind!
So far I’ve only had one bad travel day, but it was quite bad… I am hoping for some sunny, relenting days!
Sorry about your bad travel day but I’m glad you survived! The snow is still with us a week later which is most unusual, that’s how cold it’s been, but we have been loving the sunshine! There is much more since the trees next door were cut down, so the solarium often warmed up to comfort levels. It is now cloudy and warming up for rain – I have mixed feelings about that. However I’m glad for some friends traveling here tomorrow.
My friend and Ashley Cooper and I had a joint books/paintings event yesterday, and I think if we do it again, it’ll have to be in sunny, warm weather… Was a little alarmed seeing elderly people navigate the space between the house and the studio. It’s proving a slippery winter.
While here on the east coast we went out walking on a sunny and balmy day wearing only our jackets. That won’t last, but it was nice. Winter – one day at a time 🙂
Your pictures are very lovely.
How lucky you are to have such balmy weather. We must enjoy it while it lasts. I don’t mind this cold when the sun shines, it sure beats rain!
Thanks, Susan, I’m glad you like the photos.
Snow and ice seem romantic when you live in the tropics. It is beautiful. I miss winter sometimes. May get some of it in January when we come to Seattle for a week to babysit the grandchildren!
Snow and ice can be pretty and romantic as long as you are still warm. (I’m thinking of the homeless out there.) I hope you can enjoy some of it when you are in Seattle. Here we can go up the mountains for a snow fix if need be! The kids love it.
