revisiting rocks 5
a few of my favourite Hornby Island rocks with tidal pools
I dearly wished to take one home for my garden
instead many were homes for jellyfish and starfish
Just after I posted this, I came across a news item about the devastation of starfish all long the Pacific coast caused by Sea Star Wasting Syndrome. I remember how amazed we were to see so many that September of 2009. So sad.

Investigating tidal pools is one of my favorite memories of early childhood in England. I’ve always loved the sea and these photographs are a nice reminder. The coast here is beautiful, but mostly too rocky and wild for such gentle exploration.
I’d read about the starfish too. Some things are almost too sad to contemplate.
Susan, the sea and tidal pools became part of my life when we moved to Vancouver 40 years ago. Previously I’d always been inland by lakes and rivers, which I loved too.
When I read this news, my first reaction was that radiation from Fukushima is killing the starfish. Experts say not, but I still wonder. Or what about the virus in farmed salmon that is infecting wild salmon? Human greed and carelessness have destroyed so much of our environment and it will only get worse with more oil tankers on our coast.
I don’t know about the starfish. It seems they come and go. I hope that’s all it is. Those “holy” rocks make for fascinating photos.
Hattie, I’m not sure but it seems that a certain number die off yearly but this is massive, from Alaska to California.
Glad you find these rocks fascinating.
Love your rock pools! The miniature landscape is always appealing…
Marly, it seems to be part of my makeup to look very closely and thus play with the sense of scale….
