the ninth month
Novem means nine in Latin
November is the ninth month in the Roman calendar
November is about weather from wind and rainstorms to sunny skies,
about garden cleanup, trimming trees, sweeping and raking leaves,
bringing in tender plants with possible frosty nights ahead

Elegant composition, so simple and unadorned.
Thanks, Naomi.
It’s also get-away-for-a-short-break-‘cos-it’s-my-birthday month, though I’m not sure how relevant that is.
Sorry about my comment. It was total rubbish! I was referring to September, the Latin seventh month…which is now the ninth month. (Had a heavy evening last night! I’ll wake up soon.)
Ah, we are mixing calendars – the Roman vs the Julian and Gregorian Calendars! As for waking up, I should be sleeping right now, such an insomniac that I am. 🙂 Oh, and happy birthday, Tom, I think.
I am happy to report that the Water Rat has assisted me in bringing in the Tiger Lily pot from the fire escape. I am going slightly daffy now not being able to hobble and lift and the same time. Aaargh. But the plant is safe and warm. Your photo is lovely, Marja Leena!
Thanks, Rouchswalwe. You are most fortunate to have helpful friends, especially at a time like this! Hope the healing is going well.
We had our first frost last night so I must go outside to check on two or three more pots that must be brought closer to the house for it will be even colder tonight! Very windy here today but the sunshine is glorious after many gloomy rainy days, and there is more of it now that the huge trees next door have gone.
Leaves are always so fascinating, and our November is proving to be a good one for delights. Although it is meant to be the end of Autumn, it feels as if that season is only halfway through. However, I have brought in the tender pots, and must clear the greenhouse tomatoes out finally. They are still ripening, so I leave them yet another day, ….
Olga, I do love this very long season that is autumn (does in not end with winter solstice?) with the many kinds of leaves changing colours and falling, all at different times. With all the evergreens here, we are never without colour even in winter, but that does get a bit monotonous after a while. Your greenhouse must stay very warm – how wonderful to still have homegrown tomatoes.
Since Oct. 20th we’ve seen only three sunny days – which doesn’t mean we haven’t gone out walking, but we are looking forward to receiving our new umbrellas (ones guaranteed to not blow inside out in other than gale force winds). Nevertheless, the leaves and inedible berries on now bare bushes really do evoke a charm all their own.
I like your scanned collection.
Susan, it sounds like you’ve had a rather similar fall for we had our heavy fall rains start mid-October already with a few odd nice days. This week is a blessing with clear though cold skies, thanks to a so-called polar vortex which is making it bitterly cold in the north and center of North America. I don’t mind a bit of frost at night in exchange for sunny days.
