links
As most readers know, I love photographing details of interesting things like rusty objects. These are from the ferry that we rode a few weeks ago to Quadra Island and back. As I’m searching in my mind for a title, I think of ‘links’. I know that word has a multitude of meanings and assocations but I’m surprised at how many there are!
These are mostly rusty chain links, but can the twisted rope chain also be called a link or links? I recall taking similar detail photos on a ferry years ago but do you think I could find that link in my huge archives, or maybe I never did post the photos I’m thinking of? A missing link somewhere?

Those first two shots look like links from a chain bigger than the ones usually attached to ferries. Then again, the ones that go to Victoria and Nanaimo are pretty big. In our oceanside park here there’s a huge anchor with links as big as my arm from an aircraft carrier, the HMCS Bonaventure. They’re very beautiful, as are your photographs.
Susan, thanks. The links weren’t as big as an arm but not too small either. Funny thing, I’ve not noticed these details on the big ferries going to Victoria and Nanaimo. We’re not encouraged to linger around the working parts of the decks, whereas the small ones are open at the car deck level and a great spot to watch the approach to the islands.
… those “missing links” pop up when you least expect! I dribbled tea down my chin laughing, dear Marja-Leena! I’m so happy to be able to enjoy another set of your detailed photos. Always fascinating!
Dear R, glad you found this amusing as well as fascinating. Don’t burn yourself with your dribbled tea!
So many inspiring details! My mental cropping device was out isolating all sorts of inspiring corners as well as the whole. There’s enough to keep you going for some time with this lot!
Olga, yes, details again. Glad you find these as inspiring as I do. I’ve already cropped the original photos, but I’m not sure yet how I might use these in some work but they will be great to have in my image library. More coming…
I love the big fat look of the links in the first two photos.
Hattie, I’m pleased that you do. I did have a chuckle though, thinking of fat links of sausages 🙂 I think it’s lunch time!
Richard Brandt showed chain links with rusty look– but light heft ceramic– in a show here at Eutectic Gallery earlier this year http://eutecticgallery.com/cognition-contemporary-wood-fired-sculpture/. Strange to have in mind heaviness by look, then shift to entirely different by touch.
Hi Naomi! Yes, it is strange to imitate metal with ceramic, and so successfully judging from the photo. I like that he gave it a rusty look too. Intrigued, I had a look at his page and his other clay works – they are also interesting. Thanks for sharing. It almost makes me want to get my hands into clay again, which I haven’t worked with in over 30 years.
