Hornby Island rocks
From time to time over the life of this blog, I’ve been posting some of my favourite photos of the uniquely weathered rocks on Hornby Island. They’ve inspired and become essential portions of many of my works, first in the Meta-morphosis series, then the Paths and Nexus series.
Obsession, passion or a call from my ancient past? Whatever the reason, I respond and revisit these with new eyes each time. It’s been several years since we’ve visited this lovely little island and our dear friends’ cottage there. I think it’s time for another visit soon.

Oh ML! that looks like paradise 🙂
I want to live there.
I not only like the appearance of the rocks in these photos, but also the atmosphere. It somehow feels like long ago.
Thank you for introducing me to Hornby Island. I have had a dream of visiting that whole coastline ever since reading Jonathan Raban’s Passage to Juneau.
Hi Rachel, Dave, Olga – Yes, it seems like paradise, with its warm sandy beaches, funky homes and gardens, many belonging to artists, the great hiking, and of course the rocky shores. It gets very busy with vacationers around this time but the rest of the year it’s extremely quiet, I’m told (have only been there in the summer).
Olga, I don’t know that book, but I too dream of taking a small ship up the coast to the Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) and all the way to Alaska, rather than the huge floating hotels. I wish I knew someone with a yacht 🙂
Raban went on his own boat from Seattle. It is a really evocative read.
Now I want to go to Hornby Island, too…
It has been many years since I visited Hornby Island and enjoyed the beauty of the surroundings which you have captured so eloquently. One thing for certain Marja-Leena – your artistry, creativity, and talents are indeed ROCK-SOLID!
Olga, I already put that book on my library list! Looking forward to reading it.
MB – you are welcome, as are all of you! If I had a cottage there..
Roger – you’ve been there?! And your generous words make me blush – but thanks, except the bad pun 🙂
