The tibouchina (urvilleana, I think) has been blooming again since returning to the solarium. The velvet purple petals fall and leave behind such photogenic pistils and stamens held in furry paws.

< A productive six hours in the studio. Now back home with a nephew who's just arrived on a short annual vacation from his teaching job in Korea. Tomorrow he goes on to Vancouver Island to see his parents, sister and friends. A visit as brief as the morning mist.

The giant-leaved maples have been dropping their crisp golden brown leaves for a while thanks to our very dry summer. But the sight of the first red tinges on our native vine maples of southwest BC excite me the most.

This datura emerged in my pot of sweet bell peppers, not quite as large as the one that grew in another pot three years ago.
As it did back then, it still makes me think of some prehistoric giant plants, ready to take over the world, maybe coloured by a book that I’m currently rereading some twenty years later: Rumors of Spring by Richard Grant. Highly relevant in today’s troubled ecology, I must say, even as it is fantasy/science fiction.
