chafer beetle

Hand-with-beetle3.jpg

Hand-with-beetle2.jpg

After scanning a moth and a fly, along with a comment about scarabs, I remembered another insect, a chafer beetle perfectly preserved in resin, a paperweight I think. it was given to me as a gift many years ago. Of course I had to scan this too. I started with just the object but the resin has scratches and imperfections so finally I went back to my technique of ‘hand with object’ with much better success. Beautiful beetle, isn’t it?

Besides thoughts of ancient Egyptian scarabs, which are actually dung beetles, I’m reminded that the Greater Vancouver area has a serious chafer beetle infestation destroying many lawns, including ours. I think our beetle is the brown European one rather than this gorgeous green. The grubs root under the turf, then raccoons, skunks and some birds dig up the patches in search of tasty meals. I must remember to buy and apply some nematodes on it this summer (I forgot at the recommended time last year).

So that’s the story of a beauty and a beast!

My dear friend Susan, in the comments below, has challenged me to do a re-scan with my hand holding the twine. Behold:

hand studies (3)

LaelHands2BW.jpg

As I mentioned in hand studies (2), I’m playing with the idea of a series of hands other than my own. Our twelve year old granddaughter was an eager and willing model at the scanner. We did a number of them of which these two are some of the favourites.

These are two of the several photos I took the day I had the idea to use an image of both our granddaughters’ hands for our Christmas 2012 card. I might play with these some more for the possible new series of variations on hands, as I wrote before. Hmmm, I may have to find and coax the other granddaughter, daughters, husband, friends to willingly model their hands for me in the pursuit of my art so I don’t have to use my own all the time.

While I continue to work on my Hands series, I am also thinking of possibilities to follow, whether they will be variations on the same theme or something else, I don’t know yet. Anyway, I did some playing with hand scans again with an exploration of tones other than the natural. Here they are in my online ‘sketchbook’ as food for thought…

I seem to revisit hands in my work (and in blog posts such as here) many times and of course hands have been a subject for artists since cave art days. One that I recently learned about thanks to a mention by a fellow artist is Gary Schneider and his fascinating photo series called Handbook 2012. Made by hands’ sweat and heat interacting with film emulsion, these [are] unusual portraits of friends and family…(via Aperture). His work is otherworldy, stunning and thought-provoking.

And I love the thought of my hand images being self-portraits!

hand with daisies

EngDaisies.jpg

A few days ago we slipped out for a walk between showers
(such mixed cold weather this spring).

Spotted drifts of tiny English daisies in the grass, in the park,
white and yellow with tinged pink edges and darker pink undersides.

Picked a few and put them in my pocket, took them home,
to be scanned.

Ah, then this, suddenly a new piece for ‘the artist’s hand-with-objects’ series.

Read about the others here.
Seeing a possible print series in the future…

Added March 4th: I happened across another hand-with-object I had forgotten from two years ago. For this grouping I think I shall call it artist’s hand with heart.

the artist’s hand with stones

Last fall I created a series of scans of my hand with various objects for qarrtsiluni’s worship issue. To my great pleasure, all five images were published but when I wrote about it here, I posted only one of the images, the artist’s hand with physalis. Now I’m thinking I should make a home here for the others, featuring them one at a time over the next while.
