a box of promises
On our recent drive up to Whistler, a visit to the beautiful Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Center in town was a must for us, after last year’s inspirational visit. We spent most of the time upstairs where the temporary exhibits are displayed, and a new one had just been installed. Below is the first piece we loved. I’ll feature the other favourite in another post.
Called Box of Promises this stunning piece slowly rotates revealing the play of the patterns in varying relationships.

A fascinating collaboration by two artists from two different cultures and with a very thought-provoking title.

One can just look, and look……and look. Beautiful.
Yes, to the looking and the beauty!
Such an interesting title for this beautiful piece. It is intriguingly delightful, with the shapes and the shadows, being able to see through to all sides from everywhere. But, although the box is so compelling it is empty, … is this what the artists mean about the promises?
Olga, that is the question!
Both Maori- and Haida-people have been given promises, but not kept. I think that must be the matter, content. Beautiful curlicues on outside, mean for the conqueror-peoples.
This was going to be my reply to Olga, who probably thinks as we do – about empty promises. Aaboriginals around the world have struggled for their rights against the incursions of colonialists. The Maori have had much success but Canada’s First Nations are still suffering.
Those curliques made me think of middle eastern/Muslim/Spanish designs.
“They made us many promises, more than I can remember, but they never kept but one; they promised to take our land, and they took it.”
~ Sitting Bull
It’s a beautiful piece indeed..
Susan, thanks for the very fitting quote! You have such a great memory…
