at the lake
As I mentioned a while ago, in early March we went to visit our family in the Victoria area after our west coast retreat. They live in a cottage next to a lovely small lake where I always take pleasure in taking a few photos. Above is a rare-at-this-time-of-year lily pad and a view of the mirror-like lakeshore.
interesting details from the woodpile, sections of a recently felled tree….
a piece of twined willow….free-ranging chickens
… and a basket of lichens by the door

Wow! These are a lot of pictures to take in at once, but I see the common theme is the wonderful landscape your daughter and her family share. It’s a very beautiful place, and I’m sure a terrific one for the children to spread their creative and practical wings.
The colour of the waterlily took me by surprise. Also, that appears to be a very contented flock of chickens.
Yes, they all love the peace and quiet there and we do too on our visits. The lake is constantly changing with the light and lots of birds come around. We even saw an eagle chase a goose around the lake!
I don’t know what to call the waterlily at this stage of its life, as most had not yet come up from winter dormancy. It make me think of an autumn leaf floating on the water, so pretty. And did you notice what I think might be a tiny salmon fry?
Wonderful variety, colours and lines and textures. Why are the lichens being collected?
Lucy, I don’t know the answer but if daughter is anything like me, just because they are so lovely as a casual arrangement, or maybe they were collected by the granddaughters.
These are really unusual. I am impressed, also, that you were able to get such a good photo of those chickens. They are hard to photograph.
Yes, those chickens are indeed very hard to photograph! I’ve made many attempts and I’m still not satisfied.
Wondrous photos – thank you always for sharing what catches your eye. The first photo also makes such a beautiful abstract.
Thanks to you and everyone for appreciating my efforts, even these modest ones. I just wanted to finish off our holiday trip posts with these.
Lovely muted colors, even the first looking a bit tempered by the background–bright bits of new life (or maybe determined old life in that leaf?)
I’m disappointed that the water in the waterlily photo turned rather dull and flat when compressed for the web. The original is so brilliant. But the mossy grass a lovely acid green!
