art in the garden
As regular readers know, one of our daughters and her two girls have been back here from England for some time. Their father is now also here for a month. Our eldest daughter has joined us for the weekend, our family is almost all together, just missing her partner. She adores her nieces, reading and playing games with them whenever they are together. Our granddaughters (going on 7 and 12) have always loved drawing, and do a lot of it outdoors during our fine days (as above). This time their auntie is making papier-mache creatures with them! Below is one work in progress with more photos to come, I hope.

Oh, how fun! I want to play too… And I like the “Vancouvers” on the snout!
How lovely. It looks as if you’re all enjoying the best of summer, a situation I hope continues for a long time to come.
Such a wonderful photo of your grand-daughter: the angle, the shapes, the light and shadows, the textures, the delicacy of her hair and arms, the relaxed intensity of her concentration, the odd and jumbled quality that absolutely works and isn’t odd and jumbled at all, just very alive… terrific!
That is a lovely photo of your grand-daughter, I like the laceless canvas shoes and all the colours. How lovely to have children around who want to make and draw, they really are my favourite kind. And hooray for egg-box dragons!
Marly, they are certainly having fun with it – and I like the name on the snout too, though it is covered now with more layers.
Susan, thanks, the girls love being outdoors and it helps their mom keep their rooms a bit tidier too. A bit too warm still but summer feels like it will soon move into fall with the night dews.
Jean, thanks, that is high praise coming from a wonderful photographer as you. I had to take this from several angles before I felt it would work.
Lucy, thanks, they really are creative children, as are their aunts and mother. Yes, egg boxes, milk cartons and jugs and used tissues and gift wrap… a recycling bin full of treasure.
We want to see the girls with their critters!
Marly, everyone was busy with other things today so no progress on the critter(s). Auntie goes home tomorrow but hopefully the girls will finish painting at least this one and I’ll try to catch a photo.
This makes me happy for you! You’re so fortunate to have these little ones — and their parents — and they’re so lucky to have you! Today I used some Japanese tissue in its original package from a shoji-type kit that my mother bought back in the 1950s! We made so many fun things with the papers and glue. I know she’d be happy to know I was still using it! I still have papier-mache animals on my Christmas tree that we made together. And so it goes, down through the generations, making things and making memories.
Beth, yes, I’m blessed with a lovely family, thank you. And you have a wonderful memory of your mother associated with that now old tissue paper. “making things and making memories” – I love that.
What are you making with that treasured Japanese tissue, Beth?
