Macro views of the tiles on top of a coffee table built by my husband over 40 years ago, weathered, much used and loved.

Edited March 10th, 2010: A few curious folk have asked for a description or photo of the table. I’m really enjoying the abstraction and designs that come out of seeing the macro images out of context, so I feel a wee reluctant to start showing off the furniture but here is a view. The colour of the tiles in this photo, taken under incandescent lights, is close to reality whereas the macro shots in sunlight gave forth amazing brilliant colours.

home again

My apologies for being so silent for the past month, even now that we are at home after our three-and-a-half-week trip to the UK and Paris. My good intentions of blogging frequently did not happen and I often asked myself: why not? In a nutshell, I was overwhelmed by so many wondrous experiences that at the end of each day, I was physically and mentally too tired to sort the photos and search for the right words.

Naturally, leaving it all for when we got back home is not feeling any easier. I can never sleep in airplanes so our flights on Thursday from Paris to Montreal, and particularly Montreal to Vancouver were tests in endurance. We’re so happy to be home again, the best place on earth for both of us, and what wonderful weather here too! Sleep deprivation and jetlag meant naps interspersed with catching up with the family, home and garden jobs (the grass was a foot tall, the washing machine ran all day!), bills, emails, some blogs (still more to read), even a joyful walk to our favourite forested seaside park. Husband has gone back to work today and hopefully I will become more focused as well before I forget too many details of our journey.

From over 1500 photos to sort through, here is one that I feel captures a lovely moment in Paris, the city of cafés at every corner. This café just around the corner from our apartment in the Le Marais district was a serendipitous find as it is noted for having the best buckwheat crêpes in the city. In the background you can barely see the Stravinsky Fountain with Niki de Saint Phalle’s whimsical sculptures and the Pompidou Centre (more on these in another post). As we waited for our meal, we enjoyed the sight and sounds of children playing around the fountain and the warmth of the late afternoon sun as it came out of the clouds.

Below is another man made object from the same spot. A different character altogether. It is much smaller and lighter and seemingly less permanent. But is it really? A question of permanence and impermanence.

back from Victoria

All has been quiet on this blog while we were away visiting family and friends in Victoria. We had a late mini-Christmas with our daughter’s family. We caught up with their happy fat chickens and growing kittens which were keeping them close to home. One day we took the granddaughters to Miniature World which we all enjoyed very much and wondered why we had never visited it before in the many trips over many decades that we’ve made to Victoria, even when our own children were young. The grandgirls took numerous photos, as I did (but lost mine, more on that later).

We also had a nice visit with our dear friends. While the guys were out for a cycle tour, Elaine and I enjoyed a truly stunning exhibition of wildlife photography at the Royal BC Museum. No photos allowed here.

Our trip home on the evening ferry was accompanied by frequent toots of the foghorn, ever increasing as we neared the mainland. We could have used that foghorn on our foggy drive home. It was a good trip but it’s always great to be home again.

Regarding photos… I took many around our family’s home, of the lovely low fog movements over the lake, interesting details in the garden, the chickens, and many many at Miniature World. My little old camera was often acting a bit wonky. Once home I was unable to download them using two different cardreaders. There also seemed to be issues with the photo program so I tried another computer. In the end after all the fiddling I lost the photos, probably by removing the reader improperly! That’s a first. My computer and software are ageing, updates are leaving it behind, sigh. We have some work to do there. Naturally I’m disappointed at the loss of photo material ideal for the blog. So, since I do like to illustrate my posts, I’ve chosen the above image from the archives.

We’ve been away for a few days’ trip to the beautiful Saanich and Victoria areas of Vancouver Island, visiting friends and family. Most important for us was to spend some time with my elderly uncle and aunt. Because of his Alzheimer’s, they recently had to move out of their own home into a seniors’ residence. It’s been nine months since we’ve seen them, so it was painful to notice the changes and how my aunt was missing her home, sigh. But I think they were cheered by our visit and all the family photos we showed them. We said to ourselves that we must go and see them more often.

As always, we had a great visit with our dearest friends who are now in the midst of a major renovation on their old waterfront cottage. We compared notes with our own experiences over 20 years ago and shared much advice and laughter! And of course, we always enjoy staying with my energetic and fascinating sister-in-law. We had many wonderful meals in and out.

The greater predominance of decidious trees and the drier climate on the Island meant that the fall colours are beautiful there now, more noticeable than around our home. The weather was mixed, mostly cloudy with some rain, but one night saw fierce wind and rain storms here and there. Today, the sun was out more.

While waiting in the ferry lineup to head back home, we went for a walk and to our surprise found a very charming stone faced pub, rather like a hobbit house tucked in the forest. We enjoyed a nice lunch there, much better than what’s available on the ferry. We love being on boats and it was most pleasant as we were able to sit on the deck for awhile and drink in the sea, sky, islands and watch other ferries going by. (The photo below shows the smaller Gulf Island ferries).

All’s well at home. We heard that here in Vancouver, there was more rain in one day than there’d been in any day the past 11 months. The only damage that I noticed was that one of my clematis plants on a fan trellis was knocked down by the wind. And Whistler had its first snowfall of the season – winter is coming early! Good be to home again, catch up with emails and a few blogs….and to sleep in our own bed.
