textures of home #6
… a detail of a treasured cloth embroidered by husband’s aunt many years ago
It’s been a very busy week getting started in the studio, doing a bit of of fall gardening between showers, and now preparing a little birthday celebration for our ‘English’ daughter tomorrow. Then suddenly Monday will be here and the day we take her and our dear granddaughters to the airport for their flight home to London. They’ve been here over two months but will not be coming home for Christmas this year for the first time ever. We’ll miss them. It will be so very quiet here.

The title of your post is wonderful, not just for the illustration of that beautiful work that stitches you to a story from the past, but also because of that new “texture” that will mark that first absence of family at holiday time.
Yes, absolutely. Beautiful. Thank you.
I love the detailing inherent in old hand-made work that wasn’t done for any reason other to enhance life.
Is there any chance you could go to England for Christmas?
it has been such a wonderful summer with all of you here.
we will miss you terribly, especially at christmas!

Maria, thanks for seeing this and writing it so eloquently, better than I could!
Jean, thank you!
Susan, yes, we don’t often make time for this kind of work nowadays, do we? We’d sort of promised our eldest daughter that we might spend Christmas at their place five hours northeast of us if the roads are ok, but maybe one day it’ll be in England.
Elisa, what a surprise to see your comment here! Yes, it’s sure been an amazing summer and we’re very sad to see our girls go. Your sweetheart and daddy of your dear little girls can hardly wait and you’ll all be so happy to be together after such a long absence. Oh, and I’m so pleased that you are now going public with your new blog – will introduce it properly soon if that’s ok.
My British daughter is here, and is leaving soon. She won’t be back for Christmas this year. I almost always spend Christmas with the British grandchildren, either here or there, but this year Jerry and I will be alone. It will indeed be a quiet Christmas. I will think of you.
Anne, since we’ve had children we’ve not had a Christmas by ourselves. Our eldest is the one who has not always been home for it but this will be the first time for middle daughter and granddaughters. It’s the little ones that make Christmas special, don’t you think? Your family is really scattered around, and perhaps eventually all of ours will be too.
it will be a joyful reunion!
yes, a proper introduction will be very nice x
We’ll have many relatives (and kids!)at Christmas. It’s funny how I’m fantasizing a quiet holiday on some remote beach in the Pacific Northwest with a fire in the fireplace, hot drinks, Bach and Handel on the record player, and good books to read!
Hattie, believe me, sometimes in the midst of all the mad holiday preparations I’ve had those thoughts too! When E’s family lived in Vancouver, it was nice spreading Christmas between our places. We saw them off to the airport this afternoon. The little ones were so sad that I felt sad too.
