late January
The Pineapple Express recently brought us very heavy rains matched by warm temperatures up to 16C (60F) at our place, meaning no weekend snowsports in the mountains. Today’s brilliant sunny day tempted me out into the garden. Still swampy in places from that rainstorm, I put on my waterproof boots and went out for a garden inspection. I knew the snowdrops and some of the early crocuses were out, plus numerous emerging green tips of other spring flowering bulbs were a delight to see. As I cleaned up some of the leaf litter to give them light and air, I too felt a cleansing of winter’s cobwebs.
I did take some photos of the snowdrops as I’ve done every year. But the above image found on the side of the house excited me much more artistically. And yes, I did leave this cobweb in place for now.
Meanwhile I hope the folks in the northeast US will survive a major blizzard.
Added later – It has hit the Maritimes as well!

I can see why this composition caught your eye. There a sense of enigmatic juxtaposition between what’s easily identifiable and the obscure, making it very reminiscent of one of your beautiful prints
Oh, you know my work well, and that is well said, thank you, Susan!
I hear the blizzard has arrived in the Maritimes. How are you and other Haligonians faring? Stay warm and safe!
At just about 9am here there’s some snow on the ground and it’s somewhat windy but no snow falling at the moment. We saw people heading off to school and their jobs earlier so I guess it isn’t too bad. While that could change there’s not too much concern around here because if there’s one thing Nova Scotians are prepared for in winter it’s snow. Up to now there hasn’t been much.
Thanks so much for thinking of us, Marja-Leena. I would love to see a picture of your snowdrops ♡
Susan, I’m happy to hear that it’s not stormy your way. I do like and miss the brightness of snow but not in the storm form. It’s very dark and dull today under drizzly rain and fog – a typical Vancouver scene in winter.
